What is Paraquat?

Paraquat is a highly toxic chemical used to kill weeds, control grass, and remove leaves before harvest. It has been one of the most widely used herbicides in the United States for the past sixty years
Paraquat was a concentrated herbicide product that had to be mixed and sprayed from a canister, backpack sprayer, or crop-duster and was typically dyed blue. Paraquat was made available for commercial use in 1961 and was primarily used to control weed growth on a large scale. It became much more widely used when weeds became more resilient to Roundup, an herbicide manufactured by Monsanto.

Paraquat has been linked to Parkinson’s Disease because it causes neurological damage. The makers of Paraquat are now facing lawsuits after failing to warn its users that the product could cause Parkinson's Disease.

Paraquat is the primary ingredient in many weed killers. These products are designated for restricted use, which means Paraquat applicators must have a commercial license or work for someone who holds a permit to purchase herbicides. The following is a list of some of the brand names that contain Paraquat:

  • Blanco
  • Bonedry
  • Cyclone SL 2.0
  • Firestorm
  • Helmquat 3SL
  • Para-Shot 3.0
  • Parazone
  • Quick-Quat

farming and agricultural

Paraquat is most often found in farming and agricultural communities, and is used as a poison to kill weeds and other invasive plants. While it has been banned in many countries, Paraquat is still widely used in the United States. Here are some of the ways Paraquat can enter your system:
  • Swallowing or ingestion – The most common form of accidental exposure
  • Contamination - If the liquid isn't died or given any other identifier, it could very easily contaminate eating or drinking products because it is difficult to see
  • Skin contact - It can enter after prolonged direct skin contact or through an open wound
  • Inhalation - Fumes can be inhaled, causing damage
  • Drift – A neighbor may use Paraquat and the chemical may drift onto your property

Paraquat Danger

Studies have shown that a few drops of Paraquat can kill an adult male, and Paraquat spray can drift in the wind up to 300 hundred yards from the application site. Research has shown that even a tiny amount of Paraquat exposure can damage sensitive parts of the brain and neurons that interact with the brain.
The chemical damages the neurons’ protective outer layer (myelin sheath), hindering the transmission of electrical signals between the brain and the body. If the myelin sheath is sufficiently damaged it can lead to symptoms resembling Parkinson’s Disease. Parkinson's Disease causes the loss of brain cells and damage to the neurons' mind-body connection.
This disease is chronic and progressive. There is no known cure, and the effects get worse over time. Many people associate Parkinson's with the loss of motor control and tremors, but it can also involve non-motor-related symptoms.
Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease usually begin to appear in people fifty or older, though younger people account for roughly 10% of diagnoses. Parkinson's symptoms can sometimes show up many years after a person has been exposed to Paraquat.
  • Muscle Stiffness
  • Tremors (while at rest)
  • Loss of Automatic Movements
  • Impaired Posture or Balance
  • Slower Movement
  • Vocal Changes
  • Writing Changes
